Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of pain, injury and movement problems. A physiotherapist works out what is causing the problem, treats it with hands on techniques, and prescribes specific exercise so it stops coming back.

You do not need a referral to see one.

What happens in an appointment

Every appointment at PhysioXtra runs 30 minutes, including follow ups. Most clinics run fifteen or twenty minute reviews, and thirty is what it takes to reassess, treat properly and explain what changed.

Your first appointment covers a full assessment, hands on treatment, a plain language explanation of what is causing the problem, a personalised plan, and strategies to use at home. Same day appointments are available.

How we treat

Hands on first. Joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, muscle stretching, neural mobilisation and dry needling reduce pain and restore movement in the session. A lot of clinics have moved away from manual therapy toward handing out exercise sheets. We have not, because a stiff painful joint cannot be strengthened until it moves better.

Then specific exercise, aimed at what your assessment found rather than at what generally helps that body part. Depending on what you need, that can progress into clinical Pilates, hydrotherapy or our physio led gym, all in the same building.

How we measure it

We use sports diagnostic and strength testing equipment, the same technology used with elite athletes, to measure strength, symmetry and function. That gives you a number at the start and a number later, so you can see whether the rehabilitation is working rather than judging it by how the week has felt. It is also how we decide when someone is genuinely ready to return to sport.

What we treat

Back, neck, shoulder, knee and ankle pain, sporting injuries, post surgical rehabilitation, workplace injuries, chronic pain, and NDIS participants working toward mobility goals.

Dry Needling

We take the science, evidence, and statistics of your health seriously. And we like to complement this with Eastern traditions practised for centuries, such as Dry Needling.

We give pain management for sports injury, sciatica or lower back issues an added advantage with Xtra treatments like:

  • Dry Needling
  • Individually designed gym programs

Frequently Asked Questions

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

It depends on the problem, but you should be told what to expect at the first appointment rather than left to find out. Most acute problems improve substantially within two to six weeks. If nothing has changed in three weeks, the plan should change. The goal is to leave you with the strength and strategies not to need us, not to keep you booking. Ask what the end of treatment looks like.

What is dry needling and is it the same as acupuncture?

Dry needling uses fine needles to release tight muscle bands and trigger points, based on anatomy and the specific muscle causing your symptoms. Traditional acupuncture works from meridian points in Chinese medicine. The needles look similar, the reasoning is different. We use dry needling alongside hands on treatment for conditions including sports injury, sciatica and lower back pain, where a muscle is holding tension that manual work alone is not releasing.

Do I need a scan before I see a physiotherapist?

Usually not. Scans are useful when there are specific warning signs, and a physiotherapist will tell you if you need one. Otherwise they often add worry rather than information, because disc bulges and degenerative changes show up routinely in people with no pain at all. An assessment tells us what is causing your symptoms. A scan tells us what your tissue looks like, which is not always the same thing.
